SALUS POPULI

Missouri United States Colored Troops (USCT) Pension Project

We are actively locating, digitizing, and creating a publicly accessible repository for the pension files of Missouri USCT servicemen in the seven counties known as Missouri's "Little Dixie": Boone, Calloway, Chariton, Clay, Lafayette, Howard, and Saline. By making these records accessible, we aim to study how servicemen and their families remained vigilant in their fight for equality during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and beyond.

"I was sick with the effects of camp fever while the regiment was camped and on duty in Memphis Tennessee. My pension was rejected on the grounds that my labor was not debilitating. These rejections are unjust, cruel, and contrary to the facts."

Allen Claybrook, 68th Regiment, Co. C.
